Maharaja Bhupinder Singh of Patiala constructed it in the year 1891. It is spread across approximately 75 acres of land. The story behind how Chail Palace came into existence is also fascinating. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh got into a row with the British officials and was expelled from Shimla, the summer capital of British India.

Maharaja’s vanity was wounded, and he decided to make a better summer capital for himself than Shimla. He chose Chail to be the capital of the princely state of Patiala, which is 45 km. from Shimla.

The palace has now been converted into a heritage hotel, and everyone can experience its royalty and exuberance. It is nestled amongst thick deodar forests. Chail Palace offers many amenities and facilities to its guests.

How to reach Chail Palace
By Road – From Shimla via Kufri, the distance is 45 kilometres, and via Kandaghat it is 60 kilometres.
From Kalka, it is at a distance of 60 kilometres. There are regular buses that ply from Shimla, Chandigarh & Delhi to Chail.
By Air – The closest airport to Chail are at Chandigarh (120 kilometres) & Shimla (63 kilometres).

According to popular belief, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh had initially chosen this place for building his palace. However, due to unexplainable reasons, the construction never got completed even after multiple attempts.

He decided to change the construction site of his palace when a saint appeared in his dreams and told him that the place was where he used to meditate and was buried underneath upon his death. Therefore, the Maharaja decided to build a temple in his honour and henceforth it is called Sidh Baba Ka Mandir.
