Forest Research Institute

It is a very old institute which was established during the British Era. Earlier it was called Imperial Forest Research Institute and was later renamed to Forest Research Institute (FRI). The institute premise is spread across in an area of 2000 acre with majestic buildings, beautiful lawns, museum and more.

The main building of the institute is now a National Heritage, which was constructed by C.G. Blomfield in Greeko Roman style in the year 1929. It is one of the best places to visit in Dehradun for nature lovers. You can go for a long walk in the serene and peaceful surroundings of FRI. The institute also houses one of the most famous forest museums in the world. There are 6 museums based on social forestry, pathology, silviculture, timber, non-wood forest products and entomology.

Gucchu Pani

Gucchu Pani or Robbers Cave is famous for cold springs which runs through the caves. There are multiple small waterfalls all along the route that makes the journey even more mesmerizing. The entire time you would be walking through cold water, enjoying the beautiful views of the caves.

According to an old story, robbers used to hide inside the caves to avoid getting caught by the British soldiers. That’s the reason Britishers started calling Gucchu Pani as Robbers Caves.

You need to walk a bit from the parking space to reach the caves. You don’t necessarily have to carry your own slippers, you can rent them out from vendors who sit near the parking lot. There are small eatery shops as well, which sell light snacks and tea.

As the name suggests, Sahastradhara is famous for beautiful cascading water streams that make for a picturesque view. These natural Sulphur springs are known for their medicinal qualities. Sahastradhara also has a ropeway, taking you to the mountain top. Along the way you can enjoy some of the most majestic views of the region.

Tapkeshwar is a famous temple in Dehradun, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Situated by the forest side, the place offers some of the best views of the surrounding region. The main Shivalinga is present inside a natural cave. According to an old folklore, Guru of Pandavas and Kauravas, Dronacharya and his wife used to once reside in these caves. The cave is thus named Drona Cave after his name.

You need to descend close to 200 steps to reach this temple. Inside the temple, the water keeps dripping down from a ceiling on to a Shivalinga. There is a rivulet adjacent to the temple, which is also worth visiting.

Buddha Temple

Buddha temple is known for its beautiful architecture and magnificent interiors. It was constructed in 1965 by the Tibetan community to help promote Tibetan culture in India. The temple is surrounded by gardens on both sides. The walls and ceilings have colourful and ethereal paintings.

It is one of the best places to visit in Dehradun to experience tranquillity. You can spend peaceful and relaxing time in the serene environment of this place.

The tourist spot, also famous among trekkers and bird watchers, is located along the Haridwar – Rishikesh road, approximately 15 kms from Dehradun ISBT.

There is also a play area for kids with the usual slides, swings etc. It is one of the best places to visit in Dehradun to have a good and enjoyable time with family and kids. The zoo is located on the Dehradun – Mussoorie road, about 9 kms from the main city.
