Periyar National Park

Periyar National Park, also known as Periyar Tiger Reserve is located in the hills of Western Ghats in Kerala. It is one of the most popular wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala and is visited by thousands of tourists every year. Its rich and diverse fauna comprises of thick tropical forests and woody grasslands.

Inside the Periyar National Park lies another tourist attraction, Periyar lake. The construction of a dam on the Periyar river in 1895, resulted in the formation of this beautiful lake. It’s easy to spot large herds of Indian Elephant, Nigiri Langur and the Liontail Macaque roaming around in the thick deciduous forests of Periyar.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary

It is situated in the Palakkad district of Kerala. The sanctuary boasts of rich and diverse flora and fauna. Some of the animals that you can easily sport in the region include deer, white monkeys, Langur (black monkey), spotted deer, Sambar deer and more.

Lush green forests will enthral you throughout the journey. The safari bus takes you through the thick forests, quite deep into the jungle. You would get a chance to see a number of wild animals. The entire safari would take close to 4 hours, so be mindful of that.

It is one of the best places in Kerala to enjoy the natural beauty. There are various tree houses and cottages available in the vicinity, which would cost somewhere between INR 3K – INR 6K

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year 1973 and is bounded by the protected areas of Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu and Nagarhole and Bandipur in Karnataka. You can get in touch with the forest department to arrange for an elephant ride and jeep safari. It is a well-maintained wildlife sanctuary in Kerala spread across in an area of 344 sq. kms.

It is one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala for nature lovers and offers an excellent getaway option to experience wildlife in its true sense. This wildlife sanctuary is a habitat for a wide variety of animal species including tigers, elephants, deer and giant squirrel.

Thattekad Wildlife Sanctuary

It is one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala for bird watching and was established in the year 1983. You would get to see a variety of forest birds. Located around 12 km from Kothamangalam, it was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. I would highly recommend hiring a good guide as this place is pretty vast and sometimes it could become difficult for you to spot the birds.

This wildlife sanctuary is a habitat for some of the most exotic species of birds. Once inside, you would be able to spot Asian Brown Flycatcher, Fairy Bluebird, Asian Paradise Flycatcher (both Rufous & white), Rachket Tailed Drongos and more.
